Welcome to the website of Julian Russell.  Creativity with timber and woodlands is what I live and breathe.

Based near Machynlleth, mid Wales, I live in a landscape well clothed with trees and forests.  Being surrounded by woodlands allows me to be involved with their management, selectively harvesting the trees I use.  This extraction of valuable timber from woodlands is carefully balanced with improvements that benefit wildlife and timber resources for future generations.

The compost toilet in the picture above was built for an allotment group near Leicester.  The curved, structural ribs are made from glue-laminated larch.  Although very time intensive, the result celebrates the back-to-the-land movement that so many people are embracing.

Coming from a family with many artists, I love things to be well made and attractive.  There is an immense satisfaction for me in producing a design that looks really good

Following a very formative move to mid-Wales in 2002, I have built my career around the working of wood and more recently woodlands.  There is for me no better place to go to work than the woods and the workshop is a welcome refuge on the many wet days we have here.

The passion for using wood and managing woodlands is at the core of my business ethos.  Hand in hand, they allow me great access to timber as well as enabling me to work in the woods.  By using my carpentry services you will be helping support the careful management of several woodlands on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park.
